서울대학교 뉴잉글랜드 동창회의 3대 회장 (2001-2003)을 역임하신 이재신 동문 (공대 57)이
지난 8월 29일 급성 뇌졸중으로 선종하였다.
장례미사가 9월 4일 성 앙뚜안 다블뤼 보스톤 한인 성당에서 진행되었고,
곧 이어 Newton Cemetery 에서 하관식이 있었다.
팬데믹 상황임에도 불구하고 많은 조객과 동문들이 참석했다.
지난 연말 동창회 파티에도 부인 김흥혜 여사와 함께 건강하신 모습으로 참석하여
축배사를 나누어 주셨는데 너무 급작히 가셔서 동문들이 모두 섭섭해 하고 있다.
고 이재신 회장은 동창회의 초기 발전에 많은 기여를 하고,
오랫 동안 장학기금 쾌척을 비롯,
최근까지 여러 행사에 참여하셔서 후학들을 격려해 주시고 도와 주었다.
본 동창회에서는 이화여대 동창회와 공동으로 추모모임을 주최,
지난 9월 11일 Zoom을 통해 유족을 모시고 50여 분이 참석한 가운데
생전의 좋은 추억과 그의 업적을 기리는 시간을 가졌다.
이 자리에서 부인 김흥혜 여사와 따님 세 분은 고인의 뜻을 받들어
기념장학 기금을 쾌척, 현재 진행되고 있던 장학기금 10만 불 목표를 앞당겨 주었다.
또한 2021년도 장학사업에도 세 따님이 한 학생의 장학금을 후원하기로 하였고,
조의금도 장학금으로 예치하기로 했다.
추모회는 윤희경 동문 (문리 62)의 개회사로 시작되었고,
이어 고인의 장례 미사 및 하관식 사진 중 일부를 같이 보며 고인을 추도하였다.
이대동창 이길자박사의 기도에 이어
고인의 약력을 이의인 동문 (공대 68)이 고인의 모습과 함께 낭독해 주었고,
이어서 맏딸 이소영(Susan)의 아버지의 다정했던 모습을 기리는 조사,
김은한 동문(의대 60)의 ‘고 이재신 동문은 우리 사회의 버팀목이자 기둥으로서
보이지 않은 선행을 많이 하신 명실공히 노블레스 오블리주의 표상’이었다는 조사가 있었다.
고인을 위한 추모곡 ‘내 영혼 바람 되어‘가 특별히 테너 박승주 씨에 의해 제작되어 Zoom을 통해 연주되었다.
이어 고 이재신 동문과 오랫동안 성당 봉사를 같이 하신 김동희 동문(간호 62) 과
20년 이상 동창회 안에서 가까운 교제를 나누었던 윤은상 동문(상대 66)의 조사가 이어졌으며,
이대 동문 강구미 박사가 추도문 낭독을 통해 고인을
‘은은한 영혼의 향기를 보여 주신 이화인들의 힘’이었다고 추억했다.
고인의 생애를 돌아보는 시간에는 맏딸 Susan이
유가족들이 준비한 가족 사진을 설명과 함께 보여 주었고,
이대, 서울대 동창회에 관계된 사진을 같이 보는 시간도 가졌다.
유가족 대표로 부인 김흥혜 여사와 Susan의 인사 말씀이 있었고,
고 이재신 기념 장학기금 설립에 관해 장학금 관리위원장 윤상래 동문(수의 62)의 경위 설명이 있었다.
마지막으로 이대 동창회 대표 신은경 씨의 인사,
서울대 동창회 대표 김정선 회장(문리 66)의 마무리로 추모회는 끝났다.
전체 진행은 고 이재신 회장 장례 추모 준비위원회 위원장 김은한(의대 60)을
비롯한 12명의 동문위원과
이화여대 동창회 대표인 4명의 위원이 공동으로 준비하여
고인을 위한 아름다운 추모회를 가질 수 있었다.

Letter from Daughter Susan Lee Sept. 2, 2020
Thank you so much for your words of condolences about the passing of my father, Jay Shin Lee,
as well as your plan to hold an additional memorial service for him
for the alumni and alumnae of Seoul National University and Ewha Women’s University.
As you may have heard, my father passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2020,
at approximately 4:16 PM, from a cerebral hemorrhage stroke
on Thursday, August 27, at approximately 2:40 AM.
He had been immediately rushed to the hospital by the ambulance,
but brain scans showed already a critical amount of bleeding and
significant swelling of surrounding tissues that the doctors could not control,
and within hours the pressure from the swelling already started to shift
from the right hemisphere of his brain to the left hemisphere of his brain and brainstem.
My family is greatly consoled by the fact
that my father did not suffer and that he knew that he was not alone,
that for the next two and a half days he was surrounded by family until the end.
We have been incredibly overwhelmed by the outpouring of love, support, and condolences
from loved ones, and can’t express enough our gratitude
for the comfort and strength they have given us.
Unfortunately the current pandemic of Covid-19 have brought upon
an additional layer of complications and challenges for the planning of the funeral service.
We all want to honor our father – safely — as my father would have also wanted.
The service will be held this Friday, September 4, at 10:00 AM
at the church St. Antoine Daveluy Parish at Corpus Christi at 45 Ash Street, Newton (Auburndale).
Burial to follow at the Newton Cemetery & Arboretum at 791 Walnut Street, Newton
(https://www.newcemcorp.org/).
There will be no reception or gathering afterwards.
We ask those who are traveling to read and to follow Massachusetts’ Covid-19 travel order
https://www.mass.gov/info-details/covid-19-travel-order.
For those who are able to attend,
we ask that they wear masks and practice social distancing throughout the service.
Please note that those who arrive after the allowable maximum number of people
has been reached, will regrettably not be able to enter church.
We hope that everyone will understand.
For those who live far away or are unable to attend,
please stay safe and know that we are in the process of arranging
livestreaming of the church service (via YouTube) and livestreaming of the burial (via Zoom).
There will also be a recorded video of the service and burial that will made available by link later.
In addition, as stated earlier there will be no reception or gathering after the funeral and burial,
but there will be a memorial service/Celebration-of-Life gathering for my father at a later date —
most likely at the first year anniversary of his death,
subject to Covid-19 being more under control then.
Currently, we are still waiting for confirmation of
the YouTube link (for the church service) and the Zoom link (for the burial).
Once received, I will email you further details hopefully by tomorrow, Thursday, morning.
For those who may be using Zoom for the first time,
there will also be a “practice” Zoom on Thursday evening;
I will let you know the time once confirmed.
